Next Wave is the world's first organization dedicated to addressing the involvement of children in terrorism and violent extremism. We help understand the nature of child involvement with terrorist and violent extremist actors and support prevention and mitigation efforts. Next Wave recognizes that child exploitation in terrorism is an evolutionary outcome of terrorist tactics and strategy, and it is one of the core elements enabling the long-term survival of terrorist organizations, spreading violent ideology, and fueling conflict. We acknowledge that addressing the complex and evolving nature of the terrorist threat requires our own adaptation. Therefore, we intentionally adopt a forward-looking approach in understanding children's roles — as a factor that can exacerbate existing challenges but also as one that, when effective intervention measures are implemented and sustained, can provide new solutions to current threats and help prevent new ones from materializing.
As a leader within the counter-extremism and violent extremism community, Next Wave provides unique insights and cross-cutting analysis in our area of specialty. We help shape policies that accommodate both child protection and security concerns through direct, personal advocacy and work to address context-specific needs, facilitating meaningful and sustainable solutions. Next Wave is seeking a highly qualified Senior Analyst for our Roster Consulting team, with a focus on Africa. This is a roster position, meaning selected individuals will be part of a pool of experts available for consulting assignments as needed, based on specific project requirements and timelines. A roster position offers the flexibility to work on various assignments with us while contributing expertise to ongoing and future projects. Roster members are selected based on their specialized knowledge, regional experience, and ability to address cross-cutting workstreams within the scope of our services.

Given the sensitive nature of the subject matter and the leading role of Next Wave in spearheading innovation and fostering adaptability in response to evolving terrorism and violent extremism challenges, we carefully select individuals who exemplify excellence and are poised to make significant contributions. Researchers and analysts should possess a blend of subject matter knowledge, research proficiency, effective communication, strong interpersonal abilities, technical prowess, and a solid ethical framework, while also demonstrating a deep understanding of our focus regions. The consultants will be responsible for the following specific key duties:
• Conduct research and analysis on issues related to terrorism and violent extremism, with a focus on children, specific to the assigned region, in alignment with Next Wave’s objectives and priorities.
• Utilize a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies to gather and analyze data and to support drafting related research deliverables as needed.
• Stay updated on regional trends, policies, and conditions related to terrorism and children.An advanced-level university degree (Master's Degree or academic equivalent) in International Relations, Political Science, Social Sciences, Terrorism Studies, or a related field.
• Knowledge of and/or relevant experience related to children and violent extremism, and related issues are strongly desirable.
• Proven experience in research and analysis, preferably within the specific region and related to terrorism and violent extremism, and proficiency in both qualitative and quantitative research methods.
• Ability in managing logistics related to research activities.
• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with a commitment to objective analysis.
• Strong ethical standards and commitment to ethical research practices.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and concisely to diverse stakeholders, including governments, policymakers, community leaders and actors, NGOs, practitioners, and experts, is desirable.
• Experience of working in an international setting is desirable.
• Ability to work independently as well as within a team is required.
• Ability to meet deadlines for assigned activities in a fast-paced environment is required.
