Description

Boko Haram´s brutal insurgency has claimed at least 12,000 lives and displaced millions of people. The most affected by its violence continue to be children. Since 2009, the ISIL-aligned jihadist group has been responsible for the recruitment and use of 8,000 boys and girls in cross-border operations between Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger. This terrorism and crime trend has become in recent months increasingly systematic and the risk of exploitation, trafficking, sexual and gender-based violence and other forms of violence continues to pose a serious threat to children and to regional peace, stability, and development. The plight of children exploited by Boko Haram is complex, multifaceted and brings into consideration a broad spectrum of human rights challenges. Ultimately, surviving Boko Haram has become a child´s quest in Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin. This Live Briefing on “Boko Haram: Addressing the Growing Trend of Child Recruitment and Use“ examines the trajectories and rationale of Boko Haram´s recruitment and use of children and discusses challenges and limitation of existing approaches to counter it.
