Description
Boko Haram is a highly disruptive and violent terrorist organization. Aligned with ISIS, this jihadist group operates primarily in Nigeria and also affects neighboring countries such as Cameroon, Chad, and Niger. Promoting a Salafist-jihadist interpretation of Islam, Boko Haram seeks to establish a caliphate in the region. From its inception, the group has consistently used the exploitation of children as a central component of its military strategy. Approximately 8,000 children—both boys and girls, some as young as eleven—have been recruited and used in various roles, including foot soldiers, spies, and suicide bombers. Boko Haram has also frequently targeted primary and secondary schools in its attacks. This expert briefing addressed the group's persistent use of extreme violence and its violations of international law, focusing on the exploitation of children, the consequences of such abuses, and the broader implications for regional and international security.
